Working memory: activities for developing and strengthening

While working on materials for the next school year I decided to add more activities for strengthening working memory. I read many blogs, sites, aticles and came across some interesting ideas I could actually use in my lessons. Without further delay, here is the list:

Some of them you already know but here is how you can make them more challenging.

1 Simon says (we usually give commands but we could make sequence the orders- Simon says stand up, turn around and clap your hands!)

2 Sort out the vocabulary (we usually have many of those but to make it more challenging pupils should sort out e.g. food, clothes, colours and additionally sort the food according to any key they want- colours, grow on trees, fruit, vegetables, seasons..)

3 Card games/ matching /bingo and memory games (suggested card game is UNO or any other pupils play in your country)

4 What´s missing? (a card game to exercise their memory)

5 Illusions are a great way to challenge your brain- Can you see the baby?

6 Spot the difference tasks

7 Visualize the sentence (e.g. go to bed- pupils draw what they see when they hear the task, their home, their room, their bed)

8 Find in the text (e.g. find and circle the in the sentence/ text; count how many times you see the letter in the sentence..)

9 Active reading (find in the text 3 colours/ subjects.. ; write 2 new facts..)

10 Brain teasers

11 Think- Pair- Share activity

12 When did you last..? or What did you see..? survey (or some simillar surveys asking the pupils to recall of some details or actions etc.)

13 I ´m going to the _____ and I ´m bringing ______ / I went to the ______ and saw _______ (pupils have to memorize the sequence of the used vocabulary)

14 Let´s do it backwards! (spelling backwards, counting backwards, reading vocabulary backwards..)

15 Name 2 objects for every letter in your complete name! (or you could make it more challenging by asking them to name more objects or objects of a certain category or make them write down the vocabulary and use in acrostic poem etc.)

I hope I have given you some new ideas to use and to think about! Why not start a new year with I went to the swimming pool and saw the lifeguard..
