Step thirteen: Guide in decision making

A key component to children being able to develop grit and persevere in their goals is to be able to evaluate and make smart, rational decisions.

This is what you can do:

  • encourage decision-making by letting children make choices of their own; provide them with several options and ask which one they would like to take
  • teach them to carefully weigh the options and emphasize that taking shortcuts will not get them to their goal faster but will likely set them back
  • use stories to illustrate how other characters/people have solved a similar problem
  • carefully evaluate every advice to make sure it's not biased in any way
These are the questions you may ask your children:
  • What do you think your choices are in this situation?
  • Which of these choices look the most promising?
  • Which of these choices do you feel most confident about?
  • There are some options that might work. Which of these would you like to explore?
  • You've narrowed down your options, great! Have you compared them against each other?
  • What are the benefits of (this option)?
  • What are the drawbacks of (this option)?
  • Are there any circumstances that may slow you down in this option?
  • Will this option truly bring you closer to your goal?
